A while back I saw a post which was kinda-sorta bagging on Thirteen, or fans who like Thirteen, I'm not sure. I have no deep thoughts about the season premiere of Doctor Who. Jody Whittaker makes a fantastic Doctor, and the new companions look like an interesting bunch. I'm very, very glad to have multiple companions again, and if at some point we get an alien companion, or even a human companion who's from the far future or past, I can ask for no more ( Read more... )

In terms of storytelling and structure, I think this was the best Doctor Who Christmas special in years. A nice, tight, suspenseful story, some interesting new villains, and sentiment without the reliance on over the top sentimentality that Eleven's specials were all too prone to. No spoilers, but I liked it a lot -- much better than the last few finales have been. The plot mostly held together! Moffat's long arcs tend to collapse under the weight of their own convolutions, but this one was pretty straightforward, and as such worked much better.
